Soton's only puppet goal was scored by former Liverpool striker Danny Ings in the 17th minute.

Victory took Soton up to the 11th ladder with 25 points.

As for Tottenham Hotspur, this defeat shows that they have not been consistent under Jose Mourinho's care.

The Lily Whites are now stuck in sixth place with 30 points.

The course of the match

The first round belongs to Southampton because the host managed to excel with a score of 1-0.

The host is enough to dominate the game with a number of opportunities he gets.
But it was Spurs who had the first chance.

In the 5th minute, Harry Kane fired a shot which hit one of Soton's defenders, the ball rolling wildly, but Alex McCarthy could still save him with one hand.

Soton replied 8 minutes later. Nathan Redmond made a deceptive move to outwit the Spurs defense, then kicked off.

The former Liverpool striker passed Toby Alderweireld, and tricked Paulo Gazzaniga with a left-footed shot. 1-0 for Soton.

After the goal, Spurs tried to respond through several combinations of attacks.

The incident occurred in the 25th minute, Tanguy Ndombele had to come out replaced by Giovanni Lo Celso because of an injury.

Harry Kane almost scored the equalizer if only his leveling shot was not blocked by McCarthy.

The rebound ball can still be blocked by the English goalkeeper from the foot of Dele Alli, in the 38th minute.

Score 1-0 for Southampton lasted until halftime.

The second half, Soton still took the initiative to attack.

Even in the 49th minute, the referee had to decide via VAR because Toby Alderweireld touched the ball with his hand in the penalty box.

But referee Mike Dean did not give a penalty for Soton.

Tottenham seems to have difficulty developing the game.

Their short passes can always be muted by Soton's defense playing neatly enough.
