Normally, Supercopa de Espana, the official name of this event, is only followed by two teams by bringing together defending champions Spain and the Copa del Rey.

Therefore, if you use the old format, only Barcelona and Valencia will fight in the 2019 Spanish Super Cup.

So, why were Real Madrid and Atletico also invited?

This new format makes Supercopa participants followed by Copa del Rey finalists and the top two teams in the La Liga standings the previous season.

Because Barcelona plays as champions of the Spanish League and runners-up of the Copa del Rey, one slot belongs to La Liga's third-ranked team, Real Madrid.

Real Madrid's participation is clearly an important point for dredging the fans' enthusiasm, moreover the match will be held in Saudi Arabia as the La Liga market target.

RFEF assess this agreement will also help Spain's efforts to strengthen themselves as candidates to host the 2030 World Cup with Portugal.

In the previous edition, the invasion of Supercopa had penetrated Tangier, Morocco, which for the first time held a one-meeting match system, not two legs like its tradition.
