Target Declining, Manchester City Only Aims Ticket to the Champions League Next Season

Manchester City seems to have resigned if the Premier League trophy this season fell into the hands of Liverpool. Rather than that, Fernandinho as a defender prefers to prioritize tickets to the Champions League next season.

The defeat of Wolverhampton in the Boxing Day match on Saturday (12/28/2019) early last morning made the Citizens farther away from the top standings, Liverpool. They are now 14 points behind Jurgen Klopp's squad.

Instead of chasing Liverpool, Manchester City is even difficult to overtake Leicester City, who is sitting in second place. Both teams are now four points adrift in the standings.

Even they are not yet fully safe in the big four. Manchester United and Tottenham are monitoring opportunities to overtake with just seven and eight points each.

Aim for Second Place

The 2019/20 season only runs in half, so the Citizens still have a chance to overtake Liverpool. But Fernandinho chose to think realistically at the moment.

According to him, Manchester City is faced with a precarious situation which is to maintain the rations to the Champions League next season. Because the threat from Manchester United and Tottenham feels more real.

"We have to be realistic. If we play more matches like this, and lose more often, we will be in a bad position," Fernandinho said.

"So we have to keep going, try to win in our matches, and try to secure second place," he continued.

Chasing Liverpool Difficult

Manchester City is faced with a harsh reality. After successfully dominating the domestic competition for the last two seasons, they now have to lower their ego and prestige.

Fernandinho still believes that the Champions League zone is more crucial than forcing to overtake Liverpool. "It's difficult and we have to be honest with ourselves and everyone," he continued.

"We will play in other competitions now and will fight for the Champions League next season. We must realize that chasing Liverpool is tough," he concluded.
