Performing optimally is a must in a competition. No exception in MotoGP. The large cost to repair a motorcycle is already included.
How much does it cost when a driver falls? That question might come to mind when seeing a racing motorcycle rolled on a gravel.
"An accident in MotoGP can cost 15,000 to 100,000 euros," Chistophe Bourguignon, a Honda LCR crew technician,
15 thousand euros is approximately equivalent to 232 million rupiahs according to the value of the currency when this news was written.
While 100 thousand euros worth approximately 1.5 billion if converted. An expensive price of course for the laity.
As for a competition in MotoGP, this has become a risk taken. Even though accidents that look ordinary can deplete their budget.
"The motorcycles they use are heavy and very fast, so there is no such thing as a small accident," Bourguignon explained.
"If you fall because you lose the front grip [low side], at least the fairing, semi-handlebar and other carbon-based devices will be damaged."
Bourguignon gave an example, a set of carbon brake discs could cost 10 thousand euros (Rp155 million). Every time a racer falls, they have to replace it.
"Because there may be gravel and sand that damage the discs. There is no way we let the racer drive with a broken brake," Bourguignon said.
Not just a matter of cost, availability is also a challenge that must be faced by every racing team. Supply of spare parts is one thing that must be planned.
"We only provide five gas tanks. Same with the exhaust and radiator. We have to maximize it during free practice until the race," Bourguignon said.
"When a racer experiences several severe accidents over the weekend you get closer to the problem.
"If we order one device from HRC, there is a minimum production amount and shipping costs. It can all take 5-6 weeks."
LCR Honda itself provides a relatively large budget just in case the racer can race with a safe motorbike.
The head of the Honda LCR Team, Lucio Cecchinello, mentioned the figure of 1 million dollars (Rp13.9 billion) as a one-year repair budget for its flagship rider, Cal Crutchlow.
"If he doesn't cause too many problems, we have to provide funds between 600 thousand and 1 million dollars every year for him," said Cecchinello.
In comparison, LCR Honda spent funds in the range of 10 million euros (Rp155 billion) for operational costs for one year.
