Failing at Bayern, Renato Sanches moved to Lille
Lille - Renato Sanches failed miserably at Bayern Munich. As a result, Sanches chose to go and join Lille this season.
Sanches was brought in from Benfica three years ago after appearing impressive with Portugal at the 2016 European Cup. Sanches made Bayern have to redeem it for 36 million euros when he was 19 years old.
But, Sanches failed to show off because he could not compete with other Bayern star players. Sanches only made 25 appearances and without scoring so he was loaned out to Swansea City in the summer of 2017.
At the English club, Sanches also could not develop because he only appeared 15 times in all competitions. Sanches returned to Bayern again last season but again, he failed to compete and only appeared 24 times with two notched goals.
At the beginning of this season, Sanches only appeared three times and even only played five minutes in the Bundesliga opening week. Feeling his career did not develop, Sanches finally chose to leave this summer.
Sanches accepted Lille's offer and finally agreed to sign a five-year contract. Lille must spend 25 million euros to bring him from the Allianz Arena.
"Renato Sanches asked to move because he wanted to join a club that could give him more playing opportunities," Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge was quoted as saying by Sportskeeda.
"Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee that at Bayern. He needs to play because he wants to get a place in the Portugal squad for Euro 2020," he continued.
"Representing Bayern, I want to thank Renato for his achievements and wish him the best for his future
Lille does need a new top player following the departure of Nicolas Pepe to Arsenal. Moreover, they will appear in the Champions League after finishing Ligue 1 runner-up.
"I want to join Lille, so I am very happy here. I am very well received and I hope everything runs smoothly," said Sanches.
