The Golden Balloon Problem, Ramos: If Cannavaro could, why didn't Van Dijk do it?

Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos said that if Fabio Cannavaro could win the Golden Ball, Virgil Van Dijk should also win.

Since moving to Liverpool, Van Dijk has shown outstanding performances on the field. He greatly influenced the appearance of the Reds.

He has also helped Liverpool win two championship trophies since moving to Anfield in 2018. First the Champions League trophy and then the UEFA Super Cup trophy.

The Dutch defender has also won numerous prestigious individual awards. Among the best players in the Premier League and also the best players in UEFA.

For this final prize, Van Dijk has defeated Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi and Juventus superstar Cristiano Ronaldo. He is now also a FIFA finalist for the best male player, with both players.

Ramos was among those who supported Van Dijk who won the prestigious award. He also mentioned the success of his former teammate in Madrid, Fabio Cannavaro.

"I don't know, but if Cannavaro wins, why not [Van Dijk]?" he told the United States.

Happy if not Messi or Ronaldo
The Ballon d'Or prize itself has been dominated by Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo for the past decade. Both of them have won five prizes so far.

Ramos will be very happy if the winner is no longer Messi or Ronaldo. He would be happy if Van Dijk's winner and he would even congratulate his colleagues.

"We are still talking about Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi, but the possibility that other players can win is a good thing," he exclaimed.

"If he wins, I will congratulate him, he has a very good season," Ramos said.

Fabio Cannavaro won the Ballon d'Or in 2006. He then defeated Gianluigi Buffon and Thierry Henry.
