Harry Maguire Does Not Have Equivalent Tandem in England National Team

Liverpool legend, Steve Nicol, considers Harry Maguire not to have a comparable tandem in the England national team. He hopes coach Gareth Southgate has the right solution to deal with this problem.

When England beat Kosovo 5-3, Harry Maguire was matched with Everton defender Michael Keane. For Nicol, these tips prove that Southgate is lacking in a reliable defender stock.

Indeed England still has John Stones who performed brilliantly with Manchester City. But the Liverpool legend is assessing the presence of Stones is not enough to sustain the performance of Manchester United defender in the national team.

"I think if you are Gareth Southgate then the defense aspect needs to be a concern, there is no reason whatsoever. When the team scores five goals, your work is not finished. You need to see what goes behind, "Nicol said as quoted by ESPN FC on Thursday (12/09/2019).

"I think more than one while in the future he will have a headache seeing Keane's similar work with Maguire. I prefer to have a back line duo who complement each other and Maguire with Keane is not worth it. None of them has the speed, "he continued.

Nicol continued that the cause of England conceding a quick goal from Kosovo was due to Keane's mistake in anticipating the ball. "Goals that run in the 30th minute prove there is no calm. So Southgate needs to track better tandem for Maguire, "he said.

"There are still Stones, but he is always rotated at Manchester City and that is not good for England," concluded Steve Nicol.
