Arsenal legend criticizes sales of Alex Iwobi
Arsenal legend Nwankwo Kanu has criticized his former club for selling attacking midfielder Alex Iwobi to Everton in the 2019 summer transfer window yesterday.
Arsenal released Iwobi to Everton on the last day of the closing Premier League transfer window. Reportedly the Nigerian midfielder was sold at a price reaching 40 million pounds.
Iwobi itself is an original product of the Arsenal academy. He joined since he was eight years old before breaking into the first team in 2015, at the age of 19.
Arsenal actually launched a pretty good transfer activity last summer, including hook Nicolas Pepe at a cost of £ 72 million. But Kanu still regretted the sale of Iwobi.
"I can say they made a mistake [by selling Iwobi]. Why did they let it go, I don't know," Kanu told Goal International.
"He is a very Arsenal boy inside and out. He always wants the best for his club. He loves his club, but not only he can play football. What he presents from week to week needs to get appreciation from the fans," he added.
Kanu who is also from Nigeria said he was surprised to hear the news of Iwobi's sales, especially since the player was still quite young, which was 23 years old.
"I think he is young and that is the kind of player you want in the team, the player who grew up here, who knows everything about the club and is willing to die for the club," Kanu said.
"He was one of them, so losing him and letting him go is shocking news for me. I can't really believe we did it, but that's football."
Kanu admitted that he was late in learning about Iwobi's sales. The 43-year-old figure said he would ban Iwobi from leaving if he knew the news earlier.
"I can say that he doesn't need to go because he will still be playing at Arsenal. He is a good player and he must understand that," Kanu said.
"I think Arsenal are the best place for him because they are a big club and you want to play in big clubs and in Europe. You want to play the game,
