Rashford doesn't match number 9
England national team chief Gareth Southgate believes Marcus Rashford is not fit to be a central striker. According to him, the 21-year-old is better if he plays like a left winger.
"For a long time, we want Marcus to be number 9, but I'm still not sure where he is happiest and where he is doing his best work," Southgate told Soccerway.
"Marcus is still relatively young, and in the last 12 to 18 months with us, he has had a big impact on our game with a number of goals and assistance, so I think he is still in the process of doing that."
England often plays Rashford as a center forward. However, the 21-year-old is not strong enough.
With Manchester United this season, Rashford also plays more often as a winger. While the center position was given to Anthony Martial.
"Much of his development at United is a winger and I think he is not as strong as Harry Kane on the English front, and if Marcus plays number 9, he will play Kane differently, but the best match is on the left side."
"I don't think that's a problem, we have to realize that it is possible to get the best from him, that's the area he has to enter," Southgate said.
Rashford himself already has 33 caps with England. He also contributed to seven goals.
