Djokovic resigned and Wawrinka in the quarterfinals of the US Open

New York - Stan Wawrinka qualified for the 2019 US Open quarter-finals. Wawrinka qualified after defending champion Novak Djokovic withdrew from the third set due to injury.

In a match at the National Tennis Center Billie Jean King, USTA, Monday (2/9/2019), Waw, Wawrinka led 6-4, 7-5, 2-1 when Djokovic decided to resign.

"This is not the way you want to finish the match, I sympathize with Novak," Wawrinka said after the match, quoted by the official ATP website.

"He is a friend and champion and we have played extraordinary battles in my career," the Swiss tennis player continued.

After losing the second set, Djokovic was treated on the left shoulder. Injury problems make Djokovic worried since the second half.

Moving to the quarterfinals of the US Open is Wawrinka's best achievement after the 2016 championship. Switzerland will then face fifth seed Daniil Medvedev.

"I want to maintain tonight's level, I'm playing well, I'm happy to be back," Wawrinka said.
