Diego Maradona Trains Again
Diego Maradona returned to the coach after previously retiring from Dorados for health reasons.
Now, Maradona is the manager of Gymnastics and Fencing La Plata, a job he has received for the first time on his homeland since 2010. The 58-year-old Argentine legend who is also the captain of the 1986 World Cup trophy-winning team, plans to take responsibility at the club until the end of the season . .
Gymnastics, a club nicknamed El Lobo, or which means 'Lobo', is currently in very poor condition, because it is in the lowest position of the First Division. "World soccer star Diego Maradona signed a contract and is a new gymnastics coach," the club's official statement told BBC Sport.
Maradona, who shared the 20th century FIFA Player of the Year award with Pelé from Brazil, was willing to coach a team that only managed to get one point in its last five matches.
Previously, Maradona left his managerial position in Mexico's second division team, Dorados de Sinaloa, last June. At that time, he resigned because of health problems, and after the club failed to secure promotion to top-level competition.
"Now he's finally official." "I am very happy to be a new gymnastics coach," Diego Maradona said on his Instagram account.
"I want to thank President Gabriel Pellegrino for this opportunity and greet all supporters that we will work with our hearts and souls for El Lobo," he added.
Maradona's new assignment became work at his sixth club. He was also in charge of the national team for two years in 2008, and led Argentina to the 2010 World Cup quarter-finals in South Africa.
In June, it was reported that Diego Maradona left his job as a coach of Dorados de Sinalao on the advice of doctors. He reportedly had to undergo shoulder and knee surgery at the time.
Maradona was also treated at a clinic in Olivos, a suburb of Buenos Aires in early January, due to bleeding in the stomach. But, he has spent a lot of time in Mexico using a stick, because of arthritis in both knees.
