Marcelino: I was fired for bringing Valencia to win the Copa del Rey
A shocking confession made by Marcelino Garcia Toral. He revealed his dismissal from Valencia coaching position because of the success of last year's Copa del Rey champions.
According to Marcelino Garcia Toral, Valencia officials, including owner Peter Lim, did not appreciate the success of the Copa del Rey. The reason is that this is not in line with the club's policy to aim for Champions League tickets. In fact, the goal can still be achieved by Los Ches.
He added: "Throughout the season, we have received direct and indirect messages that we must exclude the Copa del Rey (however), the fans want it, and the players and they can trust it. Then the coaches want to fight and win titles there."
Marcelino claimed he could not understand. In addition, he never had an explanation of management's reluctance to see Valencia seriously at the Copa del Rey. He claimed that they considered the event to be a small tournament and could endanger the main target.
"We did not receive congratulations from the owner (Peter Lim) in Seville (after the Copa del Rey final). When I went to Singapore (met Peter Lim and club president, Anil Murthy), we" congratulated on the success of qualifying for the Champions League, not for the Copa del Rey champion, "explained the coach, 54 years old.
Although feeling aggrieved, Marcelino Garcia Toral does not necessarily forgive anger in Valencia. He even asked Los Ches fans to fully support his successor, Albert Celades.
