Romagnoli Ready to Replace Chiellini's Role in the Italian National Team
AC Milan defender Alessio Romagnoli admits he is still ready to replace Giorgio Chiellini in the Italian national team.
Chiellini suffered a severe anteroplasty injury while training with Juventus. This forced him to be sidelined for six months for the club and the national team.
Romagnoli was then chosen to be part of Leonardo Bonucci's tandem in the heart of the Italian defense, while beating Armenian resistance 3-1 in qualifying for the 2020 European Cup.
"We must always grow and be ready when we are called," Romagnoli told Rai Sport.
"Chiellini is a fantastic player and a great player, he has helped me a lot in my international missions, and I, or his successor, will do my best to make up for his absence," Romagnoli said.
Romagnoli has made ten appearances for Gli Azzurri since his debut in 2016. With Milan, he has played 152 appearances in four seasons with the Rossoneri.
With Chiellini's injury, Romagnoli has a great chance to become Roberto Mancini's first choice for the next six months. Very likely, he will maintain his position during the European Cup 2020.
