Next year Lionel Messi can leave from Barcelona
Barcelona President Josep Maria Bartomeu said Lionel Messi has a special clause in his contract. He also said that Messi could terminate his contract with Barcelona in 2020 and leave with free agent status.
Bartomeu is not sure that Messi will activate the clause in 2020. He also thinks that Messi does not want to play for a club other than Barcelona in his professional football career.
"Lionel Messi is currently under a four-year contract he signed two years ago, before the 2020-21 season he can terminate his retirement contract or play for another club," Josep said. Maria Bartomeu, quoted by Diario Sport.
Bartomeu also stated that the special clause did not only belong to Messi. According to him, some Azulgrana legends such as Xavi, Andres Iniesta and Carles Puyol also have clauses similar to those in Messi.
"This clause is not only in Messi's contract. We also gave it to Carles Puyol, Xavi and Andres Iniesta. We are not too worried about four players."
"I'm sure Messi doesn't want to leave Barcelona. But, we don't want to interfere in his future affairs. Messi is Barcelona's biggest supporter and I'm sure he will continue to play here until 2021 and thereafter," said Bartomeu.
