Debuting Less Promising, De Ligt Defended

New Juventus defender Matthijs de Ligt was criticized after a poor performance on his debut match. De Ligt's appearance was defended by Dutch national team coach Ronald Koeman.
The 20-year-old footballer played his first match with Juventus when they beat Napoli 4-3 in the second week of the Italian League on Saturday (8/31/2019). In that match, the Bianconeri threw away a three-goal lead before an own goal by Kalidou Koulibaly sealed their victory.
De Ligt drew the big spotlight for participating in three goals that nested in Juve's goal. The defender brought in from Ajax has difficulty reading the Napoli striker's movements.

Koeman compared De Ligt's situation with his failed debut with Barcelona in 1989. According to Koeman, De Ligt's mistakes need not be exaggerated.

"What is the fuss about? It should also be questioned why he did not play in the first game. Then he played because someone else was injured," Koeman was quoted as saying by Fox Sports.

"He did not play well. He had a bad moment with a goal (Hirving) Lozano. The other two goals were different. It was a free kick that turned and it was always difficult for the defender."
