Barcelona President Correct Lionel Messi Free to Leave Next Year

Barcelona President Josep Maria Bartomeu confirmed the news that Lionel Messi was free to leave the club at the end of the coming season.Previously, El Pais media revealed a special clause governing the possibility of Messi leaving the club. That could happen on June 30, 2020, one year before the contract was over.
In fact, Messi does not need to ask Barcelona for approval if he really wants to move. He can take steps unilaterally, as stipulated in the clause.

This news certainly surprised many. But Bartomeu confirmed that the clause was indeed normal for all Barca players, including Messi.

"Messi is under contract until 2021. It has been agreed that at the end of the season before the last season he has the freedom to leave for free," Bartomeu told Barca TV.

"He got the freedom to decide on his future, but he is very Cule [Barcelona] and I'm calm. Xavi, [Andres] Iniesta, and [Carles] Puyol also have the same clause," he added.

Messi himself had expressed his intention to graze in Argentina with his childhood club, Newell's Old Boys before retiring.

The clause in the new publicly known Messi contract also ignites news that says La Pulga will leave Camp Nou next year. But Bartomeu feels very confident that the player will still last a long time in Barcelona.

"We cannot give Messi a different clause, but I repeat, I have no doubt that he will survive for years to come," said Bartomeu.

Messi himself has not performed at all this season because he still has to recover from a calf injury he got in a training session on his first day after returning from summer vacation
