Italian League Postponed Due to Corona Virus
The Sampdoria players are warming up ahead of the game against Genoa on Sunday
Earlier, the regional government of the Regione Liguria announced that the match would take place in private at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium on Tuesday (3/3/2020).
Reported by BolaSport.com from Italian Football, Sampdoria opposed the move to play behind closed doors because that would effectively neutralize their home advantage.
Lega Serie A, which manages a professional soccer competition in Italy, then changed plans by rescheduling the match to Wednesday (05/13/2020).
Sampdoria's match against Hellas Verona became the sixth match of the 26th week which was postponed and changed its schedule.
Previously, five matches were affected by delays due to the Corona virus, including the Derby d'Italia between Juventus and Inter.
The rest include Udinese's match against Fiorentina, AC Milan versus Genoa, Parma against SPAL, and Sassuolo against Brescia.
While in Serie B (the second caste of the Italian League), Cremonese who was supposed to hold a match at home to Ascoli ended up returning home by traveling 480 kilometers.
The match which was supposed to be held on Sunday (2/23/2020) was canceled about an hour before kick-off due to COVID-19.
For similar reasons, on Friday (2/28/2020), Inter Milan's match against Ludogorets took place in private at the Guissipe Meazza Stadium.
According to Italian media reports Agenzia Nazionale Stampa (Ansa), the Corona virus outbreak has killed 34 people and infected 1,577 people in Italy until Sunday (1/3/2020) local time.
Overall, since the beginning of the epidemic in February, around 1,694 people have been infected by the new virus.
The Italian government has stopped sporting activities in the Lombardy, Veneto and Emilia-Romagna regions until March 8, 2020, unless they carry out it in private.
These three regions are the worst affected with the highest number of cases compared to other regions.
