Liverpool Follow AC Milan's Bad Footsteps in the Champions League
These poor results made Liverpool match the bad record AC Milan has ever set in the 1994-95 season. The status of the defending champion just like Liverpool this season, AC Milan had to surrender in the opening match of the season by the Dutch representative, Ajax Amsterdam.
Quoted Football5star.com from UEFA, Ajax who was a group with Milan in group D surrendered with a score of 2-0. Playing at the Ajax headquarters, Olympisch Stadium, Amsterdam, two Ajax goals were scored by Ronald de Boer and Jari Litmanen.
Ajax Might in that season finally also brought the team nicknamed de Amsterdammers to become the Champions League camp that season. Interestingly in the 1994-95 final, Ajax defeated defending champion AC Milan 1-0 with a goal from Patrick Kluivert.
Playing at the San Paolo Stadium, Liverpool's 2 × 45-minute squad did show a less than impressive game. Mohamed Salah and his friends could not match the game Dries Mertens cs.
Although able to hold a draw in the first round, Liverpool finally conceded also in the middle of the second half and injury time. Napoli's two winning goals were scored by Dries Mertens's penalty and kicked by Fernando Llorente.
The defeat of Napoli also makes Jurgen Klopp never again win from five trips to Italy. Klopp last won in Italy while still training Dortmund, when he won over Udinese 2-0 in October 2008.
