A successful knee surgery, Chiellini retired six months later

Innsbruck - Giorgio Chiellini has been successfully operated on a knee ligament. The Juventus defender must rest for at least the next six months.

Chiellini was injured in training last weekend before a duel against Napoli. His right knee was dislocated and preliminary results indicated that the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) muscle was damaged.

As a result, Chiellini had to undergo surgery in Innsbruck, Austria, as part of the wound recovery process. A successful operation was carried out on Tuesday (3/9/2019), local time.

To take a break, Chiellini must miss six months or be able to play again in March 2020.

"This afternoon, Giorgio Chiellinii has just undergone surgery to repair the ligament tissue in his right knee," the club's official statement said.

"The operation was successful with Professor Christian Fink from the Hochrum Clinic in Innsbruck and accompanied by Dr. Tzouroudis, a doctor from Juventus, with an estimated recovery time of six months."

For the time being, Leonardo Bonucci will take the position of team captain and Chiellini's place in the team will be replaced by Matthijs de Ligt. De Ligt made his debut in a 4-3 win against Napoli yesterday, but was criticized for his poor performance.
